Purple Hull Peas

~

© Zaroga Goff 2008

The pea pods with the purple hulls are shelled and the tender small green pods are snapped.. then into the pot with good seasonings of ham, onion, salt and pepper and simmered until tender. A slab of salt pork, fat back or bacon can be used instead of ham. Garden peppers... sweet or hot can be added too. Great served with cornbread or rice.

We grew up eating this dish only my mom called them shelly beans. I have a hard time trying to find the seeds for purple hulls. Do you save your own and would you be willing to trade some of my dads giant tomatoe seeds for some purple hulls? They look delishesand my mouth is watering.
You take beautiful pictures of your food dishes. You should do a cook book.

I think they are known by several names. My husband takes care of the veggie garden. He didn't save any seed. He says he won't be able to get the seed until next April, but would be glad to send you some.. just let us know how much and where to send them. Our email address is on my profile page. I think I would just rather share my recipes this way... it is much easier than a cookbook :-)
